Big Man (No longer) On Campus

College golf just wasn't cutting it for phenom, Jordan Speith. Climbing the ranks as much as he could, Speith achieved the ranking of the number one amateur in the world in 2012.  So, a little under a year ago, Speith decided to forgo his remaining years as a Texas Longhorn and try out the big leagues. At 19 years of age, this young star made the tough decision to turn professional and attempt to make a splash on the PGA tour. Nine months later since then, what has he done?

A PGA tour win in the John Deere Classic, 9 top ten finishes, 3 runner up finishes, nearly 4 million in tournament earnings, a rank of 7th in the FedEx Cup standings, a rank of 21st in the Official World Golf Rankings, to name a few

Not too bad by the age of 20? However, all of those statistics are simply his accomplishments on the course, he has proven to garner just as much attention off the course.

Amongst the worlds top golfers, tour earnings generally account for often much less than half of their total earnings. Corporate sponsorships play a huge role in the golf world with every tournament bearing a name of a company and most golfers donning some sort of logo on their hat, bag, clothing and even caddy.

His first partnership was inked with the equipment and apparel trendsetters from Under Armour. Not only was this his first sponsorship, but it was also the first major endorsement deal for a golfer that the company has made. “Under Armour is new, aggressive, slick, classic but athletic — kind of how I always wanted to be perceived,” said Speith about his deal.

Almost all golfers have a deal with an equipment company, and Speith is arguably with the best there is, in Titleist. He now gets paid to use the clubs he has played with all his life.

Adorning his wrist when off the course, is a Rolex. This breakout star is contractually obligated to wear these high end watches each day. Tough life for a 20 year old who just started blazing his path on the PGA Tour.

Additional agreements include Net Jets, so Speith can fly anywhere, Bio Steel Sports Supplements, to keep him as healthy as any athlete, and Perfect Sense Digital to help his branding and marketing.

Speith’s agent stated that he is in talks with new brands on nearly a daily basis. He expects to have his client signed with a financial services or car company in the near future to even further his market penetration. The sky is the limit for Jordan Speith, and one would only think his success will continue to grow.
